Comparing the Roles of Barotropic versus Baroclinic Feedbacks in the Atmosphere’s Response to Mechanical Forcing

چکیده
Do barotropic or baroclinic eddy feedbacks dominate the atmospheric circulation response to mechanical forcing? To address this question, barotropic torques are imposed over a range of latitudes in both an idealized general circulation model (GCM) and a barotropic model. The GCM includes both baroclinic and barotropic feedbacks. The barotropic model is run in two configurations: 1) only barotropic feedbacks are present and 2) a baroclinic-like feedback is added by allowing the stirring region to move with the jet. The relationship between the latitude of the forcing and the response is examined by systematically shifting the torques between the tropics and the pole. The importance of the mean state is investigated by varying the position of the control jet. Five main findings are presented: 1) Barotropic feedbacks alone are capable of producing the structure of the GCM response to mechanical forcing but are not capable of accounting for its full magnitude. 2) Baroclinic processes generally increase the magnitude of the response but do not strongly influence its structure. 3) For a given forcing, the largest response in all model configurations occurs 58–108 poleward of the forcing latitude. 4) The maximum response occurs when the forcing is located approximately 108 poleward of the control jet. 5) The circulation response weakens as the mean jet is found at higher latitudes in all model configurations.

A comparison of two formulations of barotropic-baroclinic splitting for layered models of ocean circulation
In numerical models of ocean circulation, it is widespread practice to split the fast and slow motions into barotropic and baroclinic subsystems, respectively. In the case of the baroclinic equations, the dependent variables can either be (1) slowlyvarying baroclinic quantities, obtained from splitting the original flow variables into barotropic and baroclinic components, or (2) the original un...
متن کاملRapid response of the East Australian Current to remote wind forcing: The role of barotropic-baroclinic interactions
The strength of the East Australian Current (EAC) is observed to vary in response to changes in basin-scale winds in the South Pacific, with a time lag of three years. First mode baroclinic Rossby waves would take 10–15 years to reach the western boundary from the center of the South Pacific, so a faster mechanism is needed to explain this link. We use an ocean general circulation model forced ...
متن کاملWind–Evaporation Feedback and Abrupt Seasonal Transitions of Weak, Axisymmetric Hadley Circulations
For an imposed thermal forcing localized off the equator, it is known that conservation of absolute angular momentum in axisymmetric flow produces a nonlinear response once the forcing exceeds a critical amplitude. It is shown here that, for a moist atmosphere in convective quasi-equilibrium, the combination of wind-dependent ocean surface enthalpy fluxes and zonal momentum advection can provid...

The ability of analysing atmospheric dynamics by idealized experiments using a simplified circulation model is illustrated in three related studies. The investigations focus on the organization of localized strom tracks, their impact on low-frequency variability, and on the response to external thermal forcing. A localized storm track in agreement with observations is forced by a heating dipole...
متن کاملUnderstanding Mid-Latitude Jet Variability and Change using Rossby Wave Chromatography: Methodology
Rossby Wave Chromatography (RWC) is implemented in a linearized barotropic model as a tool to diagnose and understand the interaction between the mid-latitude jet and the eddies. Given the background zonal-mean flow and the space-time structure of the baroclinic wave activity source, RWC calculates the space-time structure of the upper tropospheric eddy momentum fluxes. Using the convergence of...
